Founded by Jake Burton Carpenter in 1977, Burton Snowboards was the first world’s first snowboard producer and today is the largest manufacturer of snowboards and snowboarding accessories in the world. Burton sells its products in over 4,000 stores worldwide as well as through several online outlets and has expanded to include outdoor gear for all seasons and multiple activities.

Burton contacted Bode in September 2013 to provide a better storage solution for their inventory at their headquarters in Burlington, VT. Having worked with Bode in the past, Former Project Manager, Nick Morehouse, was confident that Bode could provide the best solution.

“The Bode team has always demonstrated great knowledge and professionalism during our past projects,” comments Nick Morehouse, former Burton Project Manager. “I knew I could rely on them to provide the same level of service for this project as well.”

Bode Equipment President and Project Manager, Scott Fawcett, met with Morehouse at Burton’s Burlington facility. The facility consisted of three levels with all inventory stored on varying sizes of pallets. “Space was definitely an issue,” says Fawcett. “Even with three floors of available storage space, fitting their existing inventory was quickly becoming a problem and left no room for future growth.” Fawcett suggested removing items from pallets on the upper two levels of the facility and placing them in a multi-level rack picking station. By placing products in hand pick stations, not only were individual items more accessible, but an additional 842 cubic feet of storage space was gained, space equivalent to approximately 30 additional pallets of materials. Handlers also had access to products from both sides of the rack station, increasing accessibility and saving time. The first floor of the facility was configured to still accommodate pallet storage with room for approximately 192 pallets in 48 bays.

A custom stair tower was added to access the upper levels as well as guard rails and safety netting to protect workers from falling items. An inline sprinkler system was also installed to meet the city’s fire code as well as motion-sensing lighting fixtures for energy conservation. Mezzanine uprights were painted forest green and beams were painted orange for visual interest and to coordinate with the company’s branding and interior design plan.

“Once again, we are very pleased with the solutions provided by Bode,” adds Morehouse. “The design was well thought out, installation was smooth and the final product well suited to our needs.”
